This is just a link I clicked on from a news stream that mentioned the boom and bust of fashions in Korea: most recently, the chewy Dubai chocolate cookie.
I liked the analysis and the rationale for rejecting the formula for commercial success, and accepting the consequences for that rejection — that in going one’s own way, one may die young.
I’m not particularly in favor of dying young, but I’ve lived long enough to appreciate that any life extended in the potential of outside recognition, while denying oneself the gratification of genuine expression, will be in many ways a disappointing slog.
You will always put off being your true self until the rewards of following expectations are enough to make you feel safe. You will never be safe.
